Naturi Naughton Gives the Low Down on “Power”
Power, the latest addition to the Summer line up of Starz, just closed it’s first season on Saturday, August 2nd, 2014. The finale was REALLY intense! So we had to talk to our girl Naturi Naughton to give us a better understanding of her character Tasha St Patrick.
AWP: What attracted you to the role of Tasha?
: I was attracted to Tasha because she was really strong. I love that she had a balance; she helped Ghost build his drug empire but at the same time was a very loving wife and mother.I liked the fact that the character had multiple dimension to her, because that would give me more to play with as an actress.
AWP: How would you describe Tasha and James’ relationship?
Naturi Naughton: They have a partnership, king and queen type relationship. They are a lot like Bonnie and Clyde, with the criminal past. They share everything and never lie to each other. The relationship is now slipping but initially it was very strong. That’s why it’s so disheartening to Tasha. She feels like she’s losing him. She’s invested her whole life into this man.
AWP: Does Tasha take any fault in James slipping away?
Naturi Naughton: She has flaws in her character where she may be pushing away and doesn’t realize it. She doesn’t take any fault right now because her mentality is not on that level to know what else he wants. They have built this empire together. Her mentality is let’s stick to what works. why do you want to change?
AWP: What are you looking for in Shaun?
Naturi Naughton: Shaun knows everywhere Ghost is, so it’s not romantic, it’s manipulation. It’s actually a power move. Tasha likes to be in control, and she will do what it takes to keep it. She knows how to hustle people, and Shaun being taken aback by her sexuality is her power.
AWP: Does Tasha support her husband’s dream?
Naturi Naughton: She wants to love him, but she only knows how to do so her way. Ghost is frustrated and that’s why he’s drifting away. It’s not that she doesn’t want to support him, but all she knows is where they came from, which is the streets. Therefore, her mindset isn’t where his mindset is. It’s like the saying, ‘When you know better, you do better’, but they’ve lost communication.
AWP: Is it easier to play a real life person (Lil Kim) or play a new character?
Naturi Naughton: A new character can be challenging because you’re creating something from nothing, but it’s a little more intimidating to play a real life person. You have to mimic, study and research a person that the public already knows. Nobody knows Tasha St. Patrick. They’re getting to see who she is by watching my performance.
AWP: Are there qualites in Tasha that you were able to connect with?
Naturi Naughton: She’s a very different character than Naturi but we do connect with our fighting spirit. I see myself having a fighting spirit, and being passionate like Tasha. Tasha is only being stubborn because she loves Ghost and I can be stubborn too.
AWP: As a viewer do you feel like Tasha is misunderstood?
: I think Tasha may be misunderstood. But you respect her because the viewers see Tasha
was by his side from the beginning. You may not agree with her but you respect her position.
AWP: The wife is often being portrayed as the “bad girl” while the mistress is glorified. What do you think that does to the psyche of women?
Naturi Naughton: In this show, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel for Tasha. However,I hope women don’t take this tv drama as a literal thing. I hope that people know that you need to fight for your marriage and the love. You may not get along with each other all the time or trust each other, but hopefully at the end of the day you get back to the love and what it’s all about.
AWP: We see you got to showcase your singing on the show, are you working on any new music?
Naturi Naughton: This is new information, but yes I’m working on new music. I can’t wait for my fans to hear, I’m actually very excited about what I’ve been creating so far. I also hope to have an original song on season 2.
AWP: How was it working with 50 Cent?
Naturi Naughton: He’s been like a big brother, very supportive. He’s like a bundle of energy. He came from New York and the streets and he keeps us grounded in what the show is supposed to be about. He’s been nothing but gracious and a pleasure to work with.
AWP: This has been a breakout role for both you, and your co-star Omari Hardwick. It’s amazing to see how far you all have both come in your career, which is a testament that if you stay committed to the race, you can finish the race and eventually accomplish your dreams. For all the dreamers out there, what would you say to them to push them through their tough times?
Naturi Naughton: Never lose sight of your goals, and never lose sight of yourself. If you know who you are and you know what you’re going after, you can accomplish anything. It’s okay to dream big, just do the work and fight for your dreams. If you believe in yourself, work hard and fight, you can do anything.
