Motown The Musical: A Trip Down Memory Lane
Motown the Musical opened May 8th and will continue to take Chicago back down memory lane until its closing night, August 9th before taking off for a national Broadway tour. The show centers around the life of music mogul Berry Gordy, from the planting of Motown Records to the legendary careers of big names such as Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson, just to name a few. Whether you grew up in the heart of the Motown era, had parents who listened to the music, or are a recent fan, you are guaranteed to be dancing in your seats when your favorite Motown songs are lived out right in front of your eyes.
Berry Gordy, along with Tony Award Winner Kevin McCollum, produced the musical featuring some of the most pivotal Motown stars and music.
AndWePresent talked with two performers in the cast: Tamar Davis and Chadaé Nichol. Davis who was an original member of Girls Tyme, the pre-debut Destiny’s Child group is a part of the Motown ensemble and has spent a majority of her life performing. The singer attended University of Southern California where she studied and received a Bachelor’s degree in music. To top off her music repertoire, she is Prince’s “favorite singer.” The two toured together in 2006 and co-wrote a song. She’s also starred in several stage production by Tyler Perry, such as The Marriage Counselor and Laugh To Keep From Crying.
Chadaé, a Chicago-native, is a skilled dancer whose passion for music and dance has pulsated through her veins since she was a toddler. She has made her rounds in the musical circuit not only dancing but singing as well in musicals such as Showboat and Oklahoma. However, this is her Broadway debut.
Although there’s no town like Motown, Motown will again, be leaving Chi-Town August 9th, and starting a national tour, where it’s next stop will be San Francisco.
