Chester Gregory Remakes Jackie Wilson’s “To Be Loved” To Honor Whitney Houston (Song Inside)
Award Winning Broadway Actor Chester Gregory, who got his big start in Chicago at the Black Ensemble Theater under Jackie Taylor, remade Jackie Wilson’s To Be Loved and dedicated it to the legacy of Whitney Houston.
Gregory got his big break when he stepped in the role of Jackie Wilson a couple of years shy of a decade ago. After receiving rave reviews, the show went on tour, bringing him even greater notice from critics. It wasn’t long before the actor/singer began creating his legacy on Broadway in shows such as Tarzan, Hairspray, Dreamgirls, and currently, Sister Act. He is an award winning actor, and an amazing singer/songwriter as well. His vocal sound is very similar to that of other neo-soul artists such as Bilal, yet, Chester’s voice is one of a kind and definitely second to none. His vocal range stretches far beyond many of his kind, and his versatility is something that one can’t help but admire.
I’m a huge fan of Gregory, and have been since I stumbled upon some of his music via YouTube a few years ago. It also helped when I found out that my vocal coach at school is the same coach that coached Gregory when he attended my school years ago. Gregory’s music is the only music by a secular male artists that exist within my music collection. I love all of his remakes as well as his originals such as If You Only. His music showcases dynamic vocal abilities and evoke true emotions as his feelings bleeds through the speakers.
I had the chance to see him perform live in Dreamgirls while it was touring in Chicago, and his portrayal of Jimmy ‘Thunderbird’ Early was by far the best I’d ever seen. He definitely captured the true essence of the character, and had the crowd going wild. He engaged the audience, and kept them laughing uncontrollably. I got to meet him after the show, and he was the most humble and down to earth star you’d ever hope to meet.
Today, Gregory is showing his kindness to all of his fans as he releases his remake of Jackie Wilson’s To Be Loved in honor of Whitney Houston’s legacy. Check out the message below that Gregory sent out to his fans for Valentine’s Day.
