Bobbie Steele Tells Our History

As an African-American politician in Chicago, she has made history several times, yet you won’t see her name in any textbook. Rather than wait, former Cook County Commissioner Bobbie Steele, has taken her history, triumphs and stories and put together a collection for us in her new book, “Woman of Steele: A Personal and Political Journey.”

Steele knew that she was destined and different before she began to run for candidacy in Chicago. It was that difference that drove her to not only pursue office but to win. Steele is a woman who has brought up seven children, has several college degrees and keeps pushing forward. She is not only the second African- American, but the first  woman to be elected as the Cook County Board President in the second largest county (Cook) in America; an accomplishment that has yet to be printed in any textbook. Through her twenty years in office, she has been in charge of budgets in the area of 3.2 billion dollars with no scandals attached.

Steele explains that she tells not only her history but “Our history, and there’s a lot of history in my book.”  She details how she was the person who initiated the naming of Stroger Hospital in the honor of John H. Stroger and how Mayor Harold Washington supported her campaigns before his untimely death. As for female politicians, Steele suggests that many of the successful campaigns ran in Chicago, “Have my hands all over them,” as she has helped a lot of women resulting in successful outcomes.

Through this book, she first and foremost wants to inspire people and tell them to think big. Readers can expect to learn how to get involved with their communities, volunteer and learn about the people that govern the city of Chicago.  This book will also inspire and teach you the fundamentals of running a successful campaign without the big budgets.

But most importantly, Steele makes it clear, she doesn’t want you to have her book, unless you’re going to read it, learn from it and put it to use!

Bobbie Steele will be releasing and signing new copies of her book this Saturday at Inspiration Kitchen Restaurant located at 3504 W. Lake Street in Chicago from 1pm-3pm, this event is open to the public.
